A Double Dose!

This week I give you not one, but TWO pages!  Bahahaha!  Don’t forget to click the “spread view” button in the upper left corner to see it in its completeness.  This does mean, regrettably, that there won’t be a page next week.  But as it’s my birthday next week, I figure this works out, a-ok.

  1. Lord Bounty says:

    So two questions:

    1) Which way is up?

    2) What are the odds of having all but two of the cards pulled being in a Major Arcana? (I could actually calculate the exact number, but it’s more of a point)

  2. Garth says:

    1. The viewer’s orrientation is correct. So, Justice, Death, and the Fool are inverted, the rest are right side up.

    2. Not good. But that’s kinda the point.

  3. Corwyn_the_Blue says:

Have you considered completing that Tarot deck and selling real copies of it? I think it’d be pretty cool.

  4. Healixzero says:

So what does it mean? Sorry I dont have enough knowledge/understanding of the tarot to really get the full breadth of whats going on, just that it is most certainly not good. Is this up somewhere? I read the Wikipedia article, but I feel as though im still “missing the forest for the trees” here. I think i understand the significance of each card on its own, and the impact of their orientation, but not how all of them being out at once in their positions on the table affect their reading?

Also, Happy birthday! (or soon to be) =)

  5. Emma says:

I geeked out a little when I saw he was using a celtic cross spread.

Healixzero, my tarot reading skills are rusty, but here’s how I would read it:

A celtic cross spread is read as follows if you read more or less traditionally, this is very cursory since as I said, I’m out of practice and this isn’t my deck:

    1. Concern: The Wheel: Change, potentially major life change. The fact that it’s upright suggests that change is good for her or that she actually wants the change.
    2. Obstacles: Death, inverted: Transformation, a severance with the past, the fact that it’s inverted suggests fear or the change having negative impact on her life. I would read the Wheel card to be more natural cycles of life, luck, change that you can’t necessarily control but the Death card as more individualized change that you can control and more than mere luck.
    3. Objective: The Chariot: The Path, the direction where your life is taking you, fate, this seems to say to follow the way laid out.
    4. Thoughts/Feelings: Justice, inverted: A lack of balance, no equilibrium, something is out of sync with the universe, the word is unfair, potential personal imbalance that can have negative consequences.
    5. Past: Two of Cups: Knowledge of love, emotions, feelings. Perhaps a relationship, perhaps an acknowledgment of love. Odd that her only non-court minor arcana is a cup.
    6. Immediate Future: Knight of Wands: A messenger bringing good tidings in the realm of society, work, or interaction with others. Since it’s in the future, well, Cailyn might be getting some good news. It could also be a person, though. Someone outgoing and personable.
    7. Attitude about the question: Queen of Swords: A strong willed woman representing trouble. This probably means a person. It could either be Cailyn’s card or an outside influence. Since this is in the attitude slot, it probably means Cailyn herself, and would either be her fighting spirit or her negativity.
    8. Outside Influences: The Fool, inverted: Everyone. The common man, in all of his basest attributes, rushing into things before looking, a need for responsibility or focus.
    9. Hopes and Fears: The Hanged Man: Sacrifice, reversal, suffering for the sake of others, a need to keep change from ruling and destroying your life.
    10. Final Outcome: The Tower: Catastrophe, destruction, the old order crumbles into an uncertain future. Sudden swift change. It’s upright so there’s hope that good things might come out of it in the end, but basically this card is saying “you are screwed, have a nice day.”

(Why yes, yes I did learn to read using Sylvia Abraham’s key word system, I’m sure it shows.)

I hope that was more or less what you were going for Garth, as I said, I’m very out of practice, so I hope I didn’t mess that up too badly.

  6. Healixzero says:

Wow… okay that was what i wanted, but far more than i had been expecting. Thank you!

I have a few questions though, if you don’t mind:

    1) what is so unusual that the only non-court minor arcana being a cup so unusual? Wouldn’t the probability that a cup would be drawn the same as that of a rod or a coin?

    2) Is the Messenger bearing good tidings likely to be Puck?

    3) would the Queen of swords being right side up (not-inverted) make it more likely that it refers to Cailyn’s fighting spirit?

    4) this is all dependent on “the question” right? the one that the cross reading is meant to answer? What exactly was the question? Is it just “what does the future hold”?

    5) All of this is related directly to Cailyn, correct? They represent Cailyn’s view/hopes and the effect of others on her, and her effect on the world? As opposed to say Card’s affect on the world or his destiny? … unless the question was about card…?

  7. Healixzero says:

… wait a sec… aren’t all but three of the cards Major arcana?

2 of cups, knight of wands, and queen of swords are from Minor Arcana? no?

  8. Emma says:

    1. Yes. That was me editorializing. It would actually be a lot more significant if she got a bunch of cards of the same suit in her spread making it a focus. I just think its interesting that the one card that isn’t a court or major is a cup. Somehow emotions are more of an issue than social interaction or health/money or trouble/strife. Also it’s in the past. I think its odd that the spread felt it necessary to point out that she knew love in the past when the rest of the cards don’t really address this.

The knight and queen are minor, but they are also court cards. Court cards are different from other minor arcana in that they are likely to represent people rather than situations or beliefs like the other minor arcana cards. I, and many other readers, tend to lump cards into major, minor, and court categories when reading a spread as opposed to just major and minor. I’ve seen people who read without court cards, I’ve also seen people who only read with major and court. It depends on how the reader learned to read and what significance they attach to the distinctions between the cards.

    2. No idea, ask the author :P I can read tarot, but I’m not psychic and can’t predict what’s up his sleeve. Wands are ruled by fire though, so it could be a totally new character. Or it could be Card. Might be Morlock.

    3. Maybe, since a reversed queen lacks the will to fight and is manipulative. But just because a card is upright doesn’t mean that its negative attributes might not also apply. Like the tower, for instance, is bad either side up, at least the way I learned to read, but reversed is just extra bad. Also, if court cards are people, well, people are neither all good or all bad, so when reading a court card as a person, the bad might come with the good. Swords always have an element of trouble even if you eventually solve it.

    4. That depends on how the reading is done. When I read, I almost always use the celtic cross, though I read in a narrative fashion rather than assigning each position a definite issue. I also tend to read blind. I ask that the person I read for concentrates on the question, but not to tell me what the question is, since I don’t want it coloring my reading of the cards. Many other readers have the person actually ask a question out loud. The celtic cross is a particularly good spread for a blind or unfocused reading because it states what the concern is itself. I don’t know how the characters handled this, though, since it might have been off panel. He could have either outright asked her and the cards either answered her question or answered the question she either really wanted or needed to know the answer to, she could have focused on the question internally, or she could have just touched the cards to transfer her energy and the cards told her what they needed to. Or we just see the things we want to see in the cards. (Though I’m a reader, I’m not religious and don’t see the cards are magical or supernatural, I think they’re like horoscopes and they tell stories about common situations that can apply to anyone at any time, their accuracy is in the eye of the beholder, because they will interpret what the cards say in a manner consistent with their own experiences. There have been some psychology experiments performed and people generally consider a reading just as accurate if you tell them what the cards actually say as when you tell them the exact opposite of what the cards say. I see the cards as more of an introspection/meditation tool than anything else since I don’t believe in magic or psychics in real life. But this is a comic about piercing the veil, so human psychology need not apply.)

    5. My intuition is that it’s whats in Cailyn’s cards, but it could be about Card if that was her focus. It could also be applicable to both.

Another thought that didn’t come to me before. Death under obstacles could mean the character Death herself. That didn’t come to me at first because I’m used to doing readings for real people where Death isn’t a person. Major arcana can sometimes be people too, and you come to associate with certain cards. Nicely played, Garth, nicely played.
